On Friday, my Mum and I ventured out to visit one of our favourite places- Trelissick. Trelissick is an estate near Truro which has a beautiful eighteenth century house and is surrounded by gorgeous walks, both coastal and woodland. It also has a second-hand book shop where the majority of the books are sold for one pound! This is always the area that I am most drawn to!
As you enter the estate, fields of luscious green greet the eye and it is hard to ignore the beauty of the land around you. The gardens are full with many different varieties of plants, notably rhododendrons and azaleas which take hold of the majority of the surroundings. Some of the plants are of exotic origin and it is impressive to see what you can find when visiting the gardens. The estate itself is situated near the King Harry Ferry and overlooks the Carrick Roads estuary and so the plants that flourish here have lots of different environments to help them grow and create their stunning displays.
Throughout the property, there are many different areas to discover. One of my personal favourites is the medicinal garden which you walk past upon first entering the gardens. Here, there are lots of plants which can be used in teas and as remedies. It is also partly a sensory garden as the different plants have colours or textures which appeal to their visitors. In the centre sits a sun dial; I like to imagine a time where watches and phones did not exist and we had to rely on the sun to find how quickly time was passing.
This garden is also a good place to rest and read for a while!
Towards the back of the estate an apple orchard sits hidden, tucked away from the busy bustle of the public and creating a peaceful sanctuary to escape into. As it is currently autumn, the trees were plentiful with ripe fruit, although they too, like their lush surroundings, were of a vibrant green, only the very tops of the trees kissed with a blush of red apples.
It is in places like Trelissick that I imagine myself living a life of wealth and luxury. In my heart, I know I was destined to inhabit another world, one where I read leisurely all day long and take lengthy rambles around my vast estate... a girl can dream! The most recent owners of Trelissick House had ties with the Spode company. William Copeland, the latest owner of the house, was grandson of Ronald Copeland, the chairman of the Spode Copeland china works. It is therefore easy to see that the estate has always known a life of opulence.
Next to the lovely café sits the bookshop which has been placed inside a charming building on the estate. My Mum and I often say that it would make a gorgeous home! Over the years, I have collected many books from here. They have a constant rotation of classic and popular fiction as well as a selection of rare and vintage books, recurrently ones which are beautiful or perfect as a gift for that special someone.
If you have not already visited Trelissick then I highly suggest going! It will always hold a special place in my heart, whether as somewhere to discover my next read or to take a breath from the business of modern day life.
Until next time!
