Spooky season has arrived! A time for chilly walks wrapped up in big coats, hot chocolates by the fire and, my favourite part, books which are filled with the signs of the season. Whether you are looking for a scary read to entice you through the longer nights or a magical story which will whisk you away to another world, read on to discover some books I have chosen to keep you company through the autumn.
My first recommendation is 'Frankenstein' by Mary Shelley. Most have heard of this tale, whether through knowledge of the novel or of the movie, and it plays a significant role in our Halloween celebrations. Therefore, I feel it is a good idea to read the book if you haven't already and consequently gain a knowledge of the original story. I read 'Frankenstein' two years ago during the autumn and it was ideal for cosying down with in the dark nights and finding escapism between its pages. With an underlying chill and a brilliant narrative, this book is perfect for those who want a sense of the Spook without being too exposed to horror.
Next, I offer you a book which has stayed with me since my first read. 'Twilight' was a massive hit when it was released and therefore it now offers a warming nostalgia to not just me but to many, reminding us of the autumns of our youth. I find that autumn is a lovely time to reflect on past experiences and indulge in things that once brought joy to our younger selves. Each autumn, my parents and I re-watch the films together. If you have not yet read 'Twilight', it is a romantic tale of a human who falls in love with a vampire. It contains every stereotype of the season, from werewolves to rainy weather to a human who is trying to discover her true identity. A must-read if you wish to escape into an easy narrative which consumes you from page one. Furthermore, it is the first in a series of five books and a novella and so it can keep you occupied right through until Christmas!
'Stardust' is a book which I read last month to kick off my own autumn reads and now I am tempted to re-read it every year! I used to watch the film when I was a child but, not having seen them since, I had forgotten much of the story. I was thrilled to be thrown back into the world of magic and wonder that Gaiman has created. With a little romance and a lot of imagination, 'Stardust' takes you on a journey of faeries, witches and royalty, exploring what it is that our hearts truly desire. This book is not long in length but the emotions that it leaves you with stay for a long time after.
A book that I have just finished is 'The Cottage' and let me tell you, this is brilliant for a spooky time of year! The back of the book alone left me scared enough, mentioning "a tap on the window"... it still sends shivers down my spine to read those words! The story itself is based on a true tale, thought the terrifying creatures within it are entirely fictional- thank goodness! This is a book to keep you up late into the night and you will not be able to put it down until you have discovered the reasons behind all of its happenings.
There are so many wonderful books out there to read in the autumn but these are just a few of ones that I would recommend. I have read each of them myself as a "spooky season" read and enjoyed them all thoroughly. I wish you a cosy, beautiful autumn with all of the spooks and thrills that you desire!
Until next time!
